I can’t beg people to play for West Indies, says head coach Simmons
“I shouldn’t have to plead with individuals to represent the West Indies,” expressed the disappointed head coach, Phil Simmons. The former opener conveyed his frustration amidst the board’s struggle to finalize the best squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, with many players either engaged in franchise leagues elsewhere or sidelined due to injuries.
The coach acknowledged the pain, stating, “It hurts. There’s no other way to put it. But what can you do? I don’t think that I should be begging people to play for their countries. I think if you want to represent West Indies, you will make yourself available.” Simmons emphasized that life has changed, providing players with opportunities to explore different avenues. If they choose options other than West Indies, he respects their decisions.
The absentee list is extensive. Star all-rounder Andre Russell, along with Sunil Narine, is unavailable for selection due to their participation in The Hundred. Evin Lewis and Oshane Thomas have not undergone fitness tests, while Sheldon Cottrell, Fabian Allen, and Roston Chase are sidelined with injuries.
Despite the recent 1-4 defeat to India, the team has one last chance to assess remaining players in the international arena before the T20 World Cup in a three-match series against New Zealand starting today.
Desmond Haynes, the chief selector, commented on Russell’s availability, stating, “From what I have gathered, I think he is unavailable because he hasn’t made himself available.” While expressing a desire for all players to represent West Indies, Haynes acknowledged the reality that players now have various options. If they choose other franchises over West Indies, the team has to select from those available to them.
The T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in Australia in October-November.
